Difference Between Filter Types

Filter Circuit

- High source or load impedance >100 Ohms
- Low source or load impedance < 10 Ohms

Pi Filter Connector

Advantages

  • Able to Obtain 40 Db Per Decade
  • Able to Achieve Very Good Attenuation
  • Cascaded Pi- 60 dB per decade
  • Construction Consists of Two Capacitors With a Ferrite in Between

Disadvantages

  • Relatively Expensive Due to Two Capacitors
  • Makes Connector Much Longer Than the Standard Connector

L Filter Connector

Advantages

  • Able to Obtain 20 Db Per Decade
  • Able to Better Attenuation Than C Filter
  • Construction Consists of a Capacitor With a Ferrite on One Side. This Ferrite Can Go on the Load Side or the Other Side, Depending on the Customer Requirements.
  • Cost Advantage Over Pi Filter

Disadvantages

  • Not As High Attenuation As Pi Filters
  • Connector Longer Than LC or C Filters (Must Accommodate Two Potentially Long Ferrites)

C Filter Connector

Advantages

  • Able to Obtain 20 Db Per Decade
  • Much Shorter Than Other Filter Types
  • Construction Consists of a Capacitor or Combination of Capacitors Only
  • Cost Advantage Over Other Filter Types Due to Fewer Filter Components

Disadvantages

  • Not As High Attenuation As the Other Filters That Include Ferrite Inductors in Their Circuit
